Lose, double, repeat, and you must come out ahead - it has sounded airtight since eighteenth-century France, and it has been burying its believers for exactly as long.

So we gave it the full treatment: eleven variants, one point two million simulated sessions of five hundred rounds each, on an even-money bet with the standard one percent house edge - plus the exact mathematics of losing streaks, which turns out to be the whole story. Because the Martingale does not fail randomly. Every bankroll size has an appointment: the round, printable in advance, where the fatal streak is expected to arrive. A 511 dollar ladder meets its nine-loss streak around round 944. Ten doubles die near round 1,871. The system does not fail sometimes. It fails on schedule, and we printed the schedule.

The most seductive object in this study: a 96% win rate with a negative expectation. Win rate is marketing. The schedule is management.

On the bench, the study’s strangest result: the WAIT FOR FIVE REDS player, who only starts a Martingale after watching five losses in a row, posts a 98.0% winning-night rate - the best in the entire study - at a median of +$8. Not because the wheel remembers. Because the ritual means barely betting: per wager, the RTP is 0.988 like everyone else. The superstition works by accident, by keeping its believer in the stands. The closest thing to beating the house is not playing, and the five-reds crowd discovered it without noticing.
